Vision 2025 is a masterplan that the Science Museum group has been undertaking to be able to achieve a transformation of the National Railway Museum which will be able to show the cutting edge innovations shaping the world today along with the extraordinary birth and the mass growth of the Railways.
The transformation will cost over £55 million which will allow them to build and refurbish each building at the York Museum and they are also doing more addition to their Museum in Shildon which is known as Locomotion.
A huge part of the refurbishments has been funded by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport of the United Kingdom. The new additions to the National Railway Museum will include building a new central hall that will be the heart of the museum that will bring together the already existing buildings which will be able to provide level access throughout the whole Museum as it will span the road that has separated both Museum buildings since the museum had opened in 1975.
The Station Hall is also currently closed for refurbishment which includes a new roof being built which will be able to provide a thermally efficient and weather tight solution to be able to protect the collection and preserve the historic grade-II listed structure, walls added in the 2010s will also be removed and also new glazing is to be added to enhance the grandeur of the hall and creating views into the South Yard.
The Museum will also be celebrating their 50th anniversary in 2025 which will come with the opening of the refurbished Station Hall and South Yard in spring which will be able to draw in more visitors to the museum as areas that have been under refurbishment will finally be opened to the public again after they have been closed past four years and will be able to see the permanent exhibitions yet again with a new lick of paint and the revitalisation of this Museum that is important to learn about our countries Railway heritage.
