The Start of the Leeds Marathon at Headingley Stadium – By Rowan Sykes

Sunday saw thousands of runners take to the streets of Leeds to take part in the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon. This is the first time since its creation back in 2023 that the Marathon has sold out to participants.

Despite transport delays from the station due to busy trains, the runners were joined by crowds of spectators. Who lined the streets surrounding Headingley Stadium. Luckily for all involved the sunshine joined them too.

The Marathon was made in name of the Leeds Rhinos Legend Rob Burrow CBE who was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) back in 2019. From that point he and fellow Rhinos former player Kevin Sinfield CBE have campaigned to raise awareness for the disease.

Burrow passed away in June 2024 but his work with the charity the MND Association has helped to build and fund the Rob Burrow Centre for MND.

It is thought that over 5,000 people took part in the marathon at the weekend, running for many different charities in the process. Around 45,000 people have taken part in the marathon, and half marathon since the event began.

Amongst those running was once again Kevin Sinfield CBE who has taken part in multiple challenges to raise funds for the MND Association and the Burrow Centre for MND. Sinfield ran the inaugural marathon pushing his teammate Burrow around the course, before carrying him over the finish line.

Sinfield has raised millions of pounds for MND charities, by taking part in multiple endurance marathon challenges. He takes on his seventh and final challenge this September ending at the Super League Grand Final in October.

This year’s marathon from the ground can be deemed once again to be a great success for the city of Leeds, and with the number of runners taking part lets hope lots of money was raised for the charities involved.
