Following on from last weeks disappointing local election results for Labour, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced he would be delivering a speech to outline his plan to get the party back on track.
After an underwhelming performance, which saw Labour have their worst performance on record in the local elections. There were around 30 MPs before the speech who had no confidence in Sir Keir Starmer continuing as their leader.
Prior to the speech, Labour MP Catherine West had publicly made clear of her plans to file a petition to remove Starmer from Downing Street, if she was not convinced by the Prime Ministers new plan.
Three West Yorkshire MPs have also come forward, rallying against the Prime Minister. Leeds East’s Richard Burgon, Shipley’s Anna Dixon and Bradford East’s Imran Hussain find themselves amongst the now 40 MPs who believe Starmer’s time is up.
Despite coming under such criticism the Labour leader still believes he is the man for the job.
He said, “I know that people are frustrated by the state of Britain, frustrated by politics, and some people are frustrated with me. I know I have my doubters, and I know I need to prove them wrong, and I will.”
Former Labour Deputy Leader, Angela Rayner also made a speech of her own, in support of the direction the party are heading in.
The Ashton-under-Lyne MP has also raised the possibility of the Greater Manchester Mayor returning to parliament in the near future. He is currently, one of the leading candidates to replace Sir Keir Starmer.
