The next steps in the renovation of the Huddersfield’s historic George Hotel have reportedly now begun, , as the project is said to be moving onto enabling works.

GMI Construction Group have now begun initial demolition on parts of the Grade II listed building, marking the first visible signs of progress in a scheme designed to restore and repurpose one of the town’s most recognisable landmarks. The enabling phase will prepare the structure for major refurbishment, while ensuring key heritage features are carefully preserved.

The George Hotel, widely regarded as the birthplace of rugby league following a meeting there in 1895, has stood at the heart of Huddersfield for generations. Plans for the redevelopment aim to breathe new life into the building, creating a modern hospitality and events space while maintaining its historic character.

Project leaders say the demolition works are being carried out in a controlled and sensitive manner, forming part of a wider programme that will see significant investment into the town centre. The next stages of construction are expected to follow once preparatory works are complete.
