Wes Streeting

In the last hour, Health Secretary Wes Streeting has resigned from his role.

Streeting has been a Labour MP for Ilford North since 2015 before assuming his role as Secretary of Health since 2024 but has resigned amid ongoing dissatisfaction within the Labour party, following disastrous election results, in which the party lost 1,500 council seats.

And he mentioned this in his resignation letter, “Last week’s election results were unprecedented – both in terms of the scale of the defeat and the consequences of that failure,” he added, “

Streeting, in his resignation letter, has said, “As you know from our conversation earlier this week, having lost confidence in your leadership, I have concluded that it would be dishonourable and unprincipled,” to carry on.

At the end of his letter he adds, “Serving as your Secretary of State for Health and Social Care has been the greatest joy of my life and I remain truly grateful to you [Starmer] for the opportunity to serve and I am deeply saddened to be leaving government in this way.”

Streeting met with Starmer at number 10, on Wednesday morning, leaving after 16 minutes. The Times rumoured that Streeting told the Prime Minister in that meeting about his desire to challenge for leadership of the party.
