Wirral-born Professional Wrestler Ginha has returned to the UK fresh after his tour of California where he competed in deathmatch wrestling across the state for nearly two weeks.
Over his twelve-year career, Ginha has wrestled across the UK, wrestling some of the biggest names in the industry including AEW star, Warhorse. Among this he has won the PWI and BWP World tag Team Championships. However, it’s his deathmatch wrestling that has caught the attention of wrestling promoters in recent years.
For the non-wrestling fans, deathmatch wrestling began in the early 90s and is a style of wrestling that consists of using harmful objects like barbed wire, drawing pins, tube lights as weapons making for a brutal watch.
When asked why Deathmatch wrestling is so appealing to wrestling fans, Ginha replied saying “I think it’s the fact that people want to see blood and violence, but it’s like a real-life movie to some people.”
He followed by discussing the main struggle wrestlers have before entering these matches saying “it’s mainly preparing yourself for the after effects of the cuts. The fact you could legit slice your arm. At the Crimson Crown show in Los Angeles, one of the female wrestlers sliced her arm open so deep it didn’t even bleed. And she couldn’t even afford to get back home. So, she got on a flight with an open wound because there wasn’t any medical attention at the show.”
Ginha later went on to talk about his first impressions when walking into the deathmatch shows saying “It felt very underground to be fair, the backstage felt like a scrapyard and back home [the UK] the setup is more professional. It had a rough feeling but it kind of suited the show we were putting on. I think it’s such a big set up in the states, that they don’t really care as much about the setup as we do back home. The wrestlers were so welcoming and respectful, they seemed amazed to have a British guy to work with.”
When asked about the most painful match he had Ginha replied “it’s weird because I didn’t really feel any of the pain, I was a bit worried when I got slammed onto barbed wire, but I think the adrenaline just overtook any pain.”
Ginha talked about his future career plans stating, “The plan is to get some more bookings around the UK and hopefully return to the states, build more connections and one day move over and wrestle full time in the US.”
