Huddersfield is set for a big transformation as Kirklees Council advances its ambitious £250 million Huddersfield Blueprint to rejuvenate the town centre. The Blueprint which began in 2019 should take 10 years to complete and focuses on five areas: The Station Gateway, St Peter’s, Kingsgate, New Street and the Civic Quarter. Workers at River island, panini shack and Shaake were asked their opinions of the initiative – and weather they think the investments will be worthwhile.

The plan aims to deliver a ‘vibrant culture’ and great place to live. The Light has already been added to Kingsgate shopping centre which includes a cinema and activities. St. peters gardens is due to have an added green space and seating. For the cultural heart project, there will be a new library, museum and event venue where events will celebrate culture, music, arts and Huddersfield’s heritage.

Zeenah at River island has said “I think over the past year, the footfall in Huddersfield has increased and because of the new Light families have come with children more and there’s so much more to do. New shops like Lovisa are modern attracting customers – Kingsgate is getting busier! The new developments to the town are worth it as people shop more at Leeds or Manchester and Huddersfield would be quiet without them.”

Abigail who works at Shaake – a milkshake store besides K.G shopping centre has said  “On sunny days, we see quiet a lot of people but on other days – not so many. The opening of the light has helped us as it’s just up the street so people come here from there.” On being asked if the £250million investment and decade wait towards the town was worth it, she responded “These processes have to be long to be worth while. I definitely don’t think the town would survive without these developments.”

Andy from panini shack stated “I really hope the new developments will bring more people to Huddersfield as it’s better for business.”

Lastly, Emma who works at The Northern tea house uncertainty when it comes to the future of Huddersfield saying “We never really know if footfall will increase. It’s declining at the moment – After developments take place it’s completely unexpected.”
