Robert Francis Prevost has been announced as the new Pope; this is after white smoke appeared yesterday on the 9th May at 5pm UK time.

White smoke appeared out of the Sistine Chapel chimney confirming that a new Pope has been elected.

Prevost has chosen to be renamed Pope Leo XIV his chosen papal name; a tradition that dates to the sixth century after being elected.

Born in Chicago in 1955, Pope Leo XIV is the first North American Pope to be elected and will be the 267th occupant of the throne at St Peter Square. He has been congratulated and praised by many world leaders.

It has said to be an ‘historic’ moment with joyful celebrations erupting worldwide.

Huge crowds in St Peter’s Basilica, Rome welcomed 69-year-old, Pope Leo XIV. As he appeared on the balcony to deliver his first speech as the newest Pope. His speech included ‘May peace be with all of you’. Inspiring faith and hope around the world.

Pope Leo XIV has stated to Cardinals “the church will bring light to the dark nights of this world”. A testimony that the church aspires to provide guidance and moral clarity during times of struggles and suffering. Whilst upholding to the adhered traditions of the role as the newest Pope.
