Celebrations will be taking place across the nation today marking the 80th Anniversary since the Second World War ended in Europe. Marking a new chapter for Great Britain.

The Second World War was the bloodiest war in history. According to the Defense Casualty Analysis System an estimated 85 million people died. A large proportion of which were civilian casualties.

Wilf Andrews who was 12 at the time the war ended, reflected upon his experiences “We had to be in the house by seven at night we couldn’t stay out.”

“I remember on VE Day we were always singing and we all had street parties to celebrate all we had been through.”

There will be a national two minute silence today at 12 to remember those who fought in the War and Union Jacks will be flown at full mast.

Celebrations will also be taking place throughout the day in West Yorkshire, with Halifax and all Kirklees town halls flying a flag from 9:30 BST.

Into the evening Huddersfield town hall and Castle Hill will be lit up in red, white and blue from 21:30 BST.

On the 10th of May there will be a service at Leeds Minister at 10:30, the service will be attended by Leeds Lord Mayor of Leeds, Abigail Marshall Katung. As well as a variety of music performances and stories told by those who contributed to the war.
