The Salford Red Devils have announced the resignation of Chris Irwin as their chief executive officer; Irwin will depart the club with immediate effect amid the club’s continuing financial troubles.
Chris Irwin, a lifelong Salford fan, only rejoined as CEO in February 2025 but previously worked at the club as chief commercial officer before he joined Exeter City for a brief period.
Irwin’s tenure as CEO was nothing short of a constant struggle with players and staff not being paid on time. The club has also had to operate under salary cap restrictions that the RFL placed them under. There has also been several key departures during this period with players jumping ship due to the late payments and uncertainty of the future. Tim Lafai, Kallum Watkins, Marc Sneyd, Brad Singleton, Chris Atkin, all left the club since Irwin’s return in February.
The Red Devils sit rock bottom of Super League with just one win to their name coming against 2nd bottom in the table Huddersfield Giants back in March. Salford are coming off the back of a big defeat at the Magic Weekend losing 54-0 to Hull KR making it a truly miserable week as part of a tragic few months for the Red Devils.
