International students are being affected by the tightened immigration policy, causing a direct link to the fall in the number of International applications across all UK Universities.

The policy states that student visa applications have been tightened, meaning most international students are being prevented from bringing family members and dependents.

The Uk Home Office reported a 44% decrease in sponsored study visa application since the policy was introduced. The full effect of the policy changes will be seen in student applications for the next academic year, during August/September.

Lucy Allison, International Opportunities Administrator at the University of Bradford highlighted the impact, stating “As a University we’ve definitely noticed the lack of students coming over. Students often ask if they are able to bring their dependents, but because of this new policy they’re unable to.”

She added this comment, “It’s important for international students to come as they contribute to society, bringing new ideas and they’re also able to access a higher quality British education. It makes the applications much more difficult for those who are still able to come. This policy will definitely prevent people who otherwise would come, its taking opportunities away from those who want higher education”

International student Savannah Whittaker stated her concerns surrounding the visa. “Applying for the visa was extremely difficult and made the application process a lot harder.”

Another student made this comment “If this policy had been in place when I was applying I definitely wouldbt have been able to come. It’s limited to those with families, and I wouldn’t be able to leave my children behind. My education is important but family comes first.”

Home Secretary, James Cleverly affirmed the government’s commitment to reducing migration, indicating that further measures are yet to be implemented. He asserted “Over the coming months, we will continue to show the pace of our progress as we deliver the control the public rightly expect.”

The Government will also be reviewing the Graduate Route, which allows international students to remain in the UK for 2-3 years after completing their studies. This review is due to be released in the next few months.
