Boots on King Street is expected to close in early June due to its lease expiring.

Manager of the Huddersfield Boots, Sarah Cooper, spoke about the closing of the store.

“We’ve had to close the store because of the lease expiring. The lease expires in early of June.”

Boots joins the many other big stores that are closing around the town. WHS Smith closed their store on May 11th, their spokesperson said; “It is no longer sustainable to continue to trade from this location and the decision has been taken to close the store as a result of the forthcoming lease expiry.”

“We are disappointed to be losing our presence in this location and we would like to thank all our customers for their support and for shopping with us.”

Superdrug on Princess Alexandra Walk in Huddersfield town also closed on January 20th.

Many of the locals from Huddersfield are not happy with the amount of stores closing around the town.

“This town is becoming like a ghost town.”

“Town centre has been getting worse for years.”

“My daughter and I went into town today for the first time in months. I now know why I don’t.”

Sarah Cooper clarified that Boots won’t be entirely gone from Huddersfield, as they’re “discussing locations” when the new Piazza Shopping centre will be refurnished and opened.

Student at University of Huddersfield, who wanted to remain anonymous, shared their concerns with the closure of Boots.

“I always went to Boots pharmacy to get my medication for my acne, no other pharmacy delivers this medicine in Huddersfield, what am I supposed to do now?”

They also expressed their worry for the towns interest when it comes to students.

“I barely go into town nowadays because of the lack of student friendly shops. I’m worried that this will greatly impact the University and the students who come.”

Sarah Cooper concludes the interview by apologising for “any of the loyal customers that came to Boots” and that “we will open again as soon as we can.”

The Piazza Shopping Centre has been confirmed to be start being built by June or July 2024.
