Bolton reached the Sky Bet League One playoff finals as they edge past Barnsley (5-4) on aggregate after being defeated 3-2 on the night.
Leading 3-1 before the second leg, Bolton looked determined to get their revenge and overcome the side that knocked them out at this same stage last season. During the game there were some nervous moments for Trotters fans, as goals from Adam Phillips and a double from Sam Cosgrove provided viewers with a grandstand finish.
Bolton did manage to hold on, meaning a trip to Wembley now confirmed on the horizon with their opponents still unknown.
Bolton manager Ian Evatt was seen to be conflicted with emotions post match as he said “it was nail biting, and it didn’t have to be that way. But we have to enjoy it and we’ve done enough over the two games to be there”.
Although Wembley has been some what of a regular occurrence for Trotters fans, it has been over 20 years since the club has reached a play off final with the last time coming on the 31st May 1999.
Barnsley Interim manager Martin Devaney was overjoyed with pride after the match as he reiterated to Tykes fans, “The performance showed how much we cared”.
