Kirklees council is being urged to reconsider elements of its Cultural Heart plans or risk losing the historic Piazza centre.

The group Same Skies says that, instead of going ahead with the planned demolition, renovating the remaining buildings as a venue for the arts, community groups and new business start-ups could prove a more cost effective option for the council during hard financial times.

The centre has housed companies such as Dark Horse theatre, a theatre company for people with learning disabilities and is the temporary home for the art gallery and is estimated to earn £400,000 a year for the community

Huddersfield resident Peter Brookes adds: “The Piazza is a great staple of the Huddersfield community and there is a lot of good businesses that will sadly not be there anymore”.
