‘Libby, are you home yet?’ is a documentary series, which originally aired on Sky Crime. This documentary won the award for ‘Factual series’, at the 2023 BAFTAs. It details the story of 21-year-old University student Libby Squire. Libby was abducted, raped, and murdered on her way home from a nightclub, in her university city of Hull, during the early hours of February 1st, 2019.
Libby’s mother, Lisa Squire, also gave her thoughts on the documentary’s BAFTA win to BBC News. “You’ve got friends and people saying, ‘How exciting, Congratulations’ and you think ‘I would give all of that up, I just want to be a normal mum, sat on the sofa, with all my children’.” She also stated that she hopes that the documentary series’ win and subsequent heightened attention, would raise awareness and educate people about violence against women and girls.
Mrs Squire has also previously stated that she plans to meet with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, to discuss safety for women and girls with him.
Anna Hall, the director of ‘Libby are you home yet?’ was joined on stage by Libby Squire’s parents, when accepting the award, at the BAFTA’s award ceremony in London, at Royal Festival Hall. While onstage, Anna Hall gave an acceptation speech, in which she said: “Tonight is bittersweet for us because we are here, and Libby isn’t. As we were making this series, we fell in love with Libby, she was a funny, kind, loyal, clever young woman. Who was ripped from this world four years ago.”
The documentary detailed the circumstances surrounding Libby’s disappearance. In addition to documenting the eventual arrest of Pawel Relowicz, for her rape and murder. He was sentenced to life imprisonment in February 2021.
Other winners, at this year’s annual BAFTA Awards, include, Apple TV+’s series ‘Bad Sisters’ which took home best drama. BBC three’s ‘Mood’ won best miniseries. The International award went to Netflix’s ‘Dahmer- Monster: The Jeffery Dahmer story’.
As for the two awards going to best actor and actress. Kate Winslet won the award for leading actress for her performance in ‘I am Ruth’. She made an acceptance speech which many called powerful. She spoke about acting alongside her daughter, eradicating harmful content on the internet and mental health. Ben Whishaw took home the Leading Actor award for his portrayal of real-life former NHS junior doctor, Adam Kay in ‘This is going to hurt’.
